Temporary T1D

Scholarships

Below is a list of scholarships and diabetes-related programs that I applied to. The best time to apply for scholarships is senior year of high school, but there is never a bad time to apply! Some are regional, so be sure to check eligibility and note that deadlines may change from year to year.

NextGen Fellowship (Diabetes Link)

thediabeteslink.org/take-action/become-a-nextgen-fellow/

Each year, the Diabetes Link (formerly College Diabetes Network) offers a NextGen Fellowship! I did this program in 2023 (even though my school didn't even have a chapter) and it was incredible. It's not a scholarship, but it does cover attending a conference. Along with the conference, you have weekly meetings over the summer where you get to meet industry leaders.

Bold.org Scholarships

app.bold.org

To find relevant scholarships, just enter “Diabetes” in the search bar! Skin Grip regularly sponsors a scholarship where the application is just a 1 minute video. You can also use other search terms such as "autoimmune" and "blood disorder". I won the Chronic Boss Scholarship through this site. Of course you can also search for general, non-diabetes scholarships here as well!

MannKind & Diabetes Link Scholarship

https://bold.org/scholarships/mannkind-al-mann-centennial-scholarship/

Closes: March 20th, 2026

Eligibility: 18-22 years old with T1D

Amount: $10,000

One new and notable scholarship on Bold.org is the MannKind Al Mann Centennial Scholarship to celebrate the legacy of Al Mann. Applicants should be incoming freshman or current undergraduate students studying life sciences or a related field.

Diabetes Scholars (Beyond Type One)

diabetesscholars.org/college-scholarship/

Opens: Typically Early Summertime

Eligibility: High school senior with T1D

Amount: Varies, up to $5,000

One application makes you eligible for many scholarships (you can only receive one). Requires ~3 essays, but they award a lot of scholarships of varying amounts. I applied and received funding from this one.

Lawrence Madeiros Scholarship Fund

www.thelmsf.org/scholarship

Closes: Typically Early May

Eligibility: High school senior with a blood disorder (T1D counts)

Amount: $1,000

I received this one! It is just a simple online application, the organization is great.

John E. Kostic Memorial Scholarship

www.johnekostic.org/areas-of-focus/scholarships/diabetes-scholarship

Eligibility: NJ High School Senior with T1D

Amount: $2,000

Sadly, it looks like they didn't award one in 2025, but I did receive it in the past — hopefully it will open again.

Verplank Foundation

Closes: Typically mid-April

Eligibility: High school senior with T1D that plays a sport

Amount: $10,000, renewable for four years

I didn’t get this one, but I made it pretty far in the process. The application is only one essay, and it’s a huge award — definitely worth applying to if eligible.
